⚠️ Seasonal Hair Shedding: What You Need to Know

If you’ve stepped out of the shower lately and thought, “Why is there so much hair in the drain?!” – you’re definitely not alone.

Every year, between late August and October, we see a big rise in clients worrying about hair loss. The good news? In most cases, this isn’t permanent hair loss at all – it’s something called seasonal hair shedding, and it’s a completely normal part of the hair growth cycle.

Let’s break it down in a calm, non-scary way 💛

What is seasonal hair shedding?

Seasonal shedding is when you notice more strands falling out than usual over a short period of time. It often peaks from the end of summer into early autumn, and then gradually settles back down.

It’s thought to be something we’ve inherited from our ancestors who lived outdoors. While no one knows the exact reason, experts believe it’s linked to changes in our environment as we shift from summer into autumn.

Just like the trees start dropping their leaves… our scalps can shed a little more too 🍂

Why does it happen?

Although research is still ongoing, there are a few common theories about why seasonal hair loss happens:

Shorter daylight hours – As the days get darker, our bodies experience changes in hormones that may affect the hair growth cycle.

Temperature changes – Moving from warm summer weather into cooler, windier conditions can impact our scalp and hair.

Our bodies adapting to the seasons – Some experts think it’s linked to how the body naturally adjusts as we head into the colder months.

Whatever the reason, this shedding usually isn’t a sign that something is “wrong” – it’s often just your body moving through a natural phase.

How much hair loss is “normal”?

On average, most people lose 50–100 hairs per day – that’s just the result of the normal hair growth cycle. During seasonal shedding, that number can be higher, which is why:

Your brush might look fuller than usual

You might notice more hair in the shower

You may see more loose strands on your clothes or pillow

It can feel really alarming, especially if you’re emotionally attached to your length or you’ve worked hard on your hair health. But if your scalp still looks normal and your hair doesn’t seem to be visibly thinning, it’s often just a temporary phase that settles on its own.

Supporting your hair through seasonal shedding

Even if shedding is normal, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do. Think of this time as a chance to really nurture your scalp, hair and body.

1. Be kind to your scalp

Avoid super-tight hairstyles that pull at the roots

Don’t over-scrub – opt for a gentle but thorough shampoo

Treat yourself to regular scalp massages to stimulate circulation

2. Look after your gut and overall health

Healthy hair starts from the inside. Focus on:

A balanced diet with protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals

Staying hydrated

Managing stress where possible (easier said than done, we know!)

3. Add nutritional support – this is where Glowwa shines ✨

At Safy B's, one of our go-to recommendations during shedding season is Glowwa,  a targeted supplement designed to support healthy hair growth from within.

We love Glowwa because it focuses on things like:

Nutrients that support normal hair growth

Ingredients that work with your gut and overall wellbeing

Supporting the hair cycle over time, rather than promising an overnight “quick fix”

We’ve seen so many of our clients notice:

Stronger-feeling hair

Improved shine and condition

A boost in confidence, especially during the months where shedding feels more noticeable

It’s not magic – it’s about giving your body consistent, supportive nutrition, so your hair has the best possible foundation.
